Right Brain’s Way: Chapter 3: Get ready to work hard and to enjoy the process

The reason a problem has remained intact in your life is directly related to your reluctance to do the hard work required to change the situation. This is not to say that you are lazy or consciously avoiding choosing the right thing to do. Oxymoronically, it may be because you "enjoy" suffering.

A severe problem allows you the option of either going through the arduous process of battling an addiction or escaping into an infantile avoidance. This is our chance to silently regress to a childlike helplessness, where we can whimper in misery and just wish mother would come to the rescue and enfold us in her comforting warmth. We know, deep inside, that if we stay with the pain (like a baby relentlessly crying), we will eventually be given the attention we so long for. This anticipation by itself creates a hidden sense of pleasure that is tightly linked to suffering. We may call this a "negative pleasure." Having a problem and staying with it is indeed a masochistic phenomenon.

So what reason do we have for getting rid of the problem? If we somehow manage to delude ourselves into believing that we will be granted special attention, why would we stop behaving like that? Without going any deeper into a complex theory, we can simply try to agree with this possibility: we favor keeping our problems close to us due to some masochistic tendency.

What I am offering you is a way to invest the same amount of energy you already waste and in turn get a better kind of pleasure that is positive instead of negative. Isn't it a fair deal?

Ending a problem is no walk in the park, despite the fact that it may seem like one once it is all done and over with. All the work needed to get to that point, however, is substantial and requires your full attention, as well as your willingness and readiness to put in some effort. The fact that a problem presents itself in the looming shape of an addiction to hide behind is a more troubling issue. It is important to understand that the addiction serves the purpose of defending and protecting you from what your personality perceives to be a threat. We need to prepare for some hard work in order to create a new reality.

The good news is that this hard work is going to be mostly enjoyable. It will not be a series of hardships and painful things to cope with. All along, you have been working hard with your problem, but in a counterproductive way. By definition, this is true suffering. We suffer and ache from our problems, and all the energy we invest just sucks us deeper.

Once you manage to connect that this work has two aspects – suffering and relief – you will soon see encouraging points of light in the darkness. All we need to do is shift our attention to a kind of "hard work" that will fill us with energy and lift our mood.

Reflecting right now on your main problem that you want to "get out of your system," I want you to realize that a substantial part of your addiction to your problem is manifested as a stubborn refusal to do the work needed to get out of it. This will be the reason you may feel uneasy with the Right-Brain methods that will be handed to you. This is why it will be "hard work." I am forewarning you now so you can recognize that immediate impulse to reject the work, knowing that it goes against your long-established refusal to change. Prepare yourself to have the courage to begin the process. Once you do, you will soon discover that practicing the Right-Brain's way is a source of joy, pleasure and healing.

I guarantee that if you do the work, together with reading this material, you will change your reality regarding the issue you want to deal with. You will need patience, faith and persistence. In this process, remember that it is easier and preferable for the personality to live with less problems – so it will choose this path if you let it. Each way of implementing the many ideas you have is a way for you to take another determined step down this path. You may surprisingly find that the work is mostly pleasant.

I have succeeded in helping people get out of as many problems as you can imagine. I have witnessed so many events that other people consider unbelievable. Change and an irreversible abandonment of problems is within almost everyone's reach, believe me. The extent of transformation the Right-Brain can take an individual to is enormous. The crucial point is when you realize you must "work for your living" and that you must "earn your health." The addictive aspect of the problem will try to pull you out of this idea, but once you manage to create the link between "hard working" and "pleasure" everything will become much easier.

Pleasure is an inseparable part of Right-Brain work. The Right-Brain, in contrast to the Left, cannot work without receiving pleasure. The Right-Brain is the place where we sense pleasure as well as other things we cannot quantify. In fact, if you want to make sure you did the proper Right-Brain work, you can ask yourself afterwards if you enjoyed yourself. If you didn't, your Right-Brain must have been blocked from its optimal work capacity and was drawn into a default sensation of suffering.

You probably have cut yourself off from your creative Right-Brain's healthy resources that can help you alter your present problem. The reason the problem persists is because all of the Left-Brain's attempts have proven themselves ineffective. It is now time to develop a cooperative working relationship between the two halves of our neurological system and work towards change.

Your mission is to learn how to exercise your Right-Brain consistently by doing the work you can do, no matter how you choose to do it. You do this in order to gain the positive pleasure that comes along with it, and to gradually let go of that old habit of feeding your soul with a low-grade, masochistic negative pleasure that stems from somewhere in your childhood history. This task is truly possible.

Ask the questions now, again and even many times more, unless you want your problem to remain for a very long time.
